Closer to Heaven at Holy Cross Chapel | Sedona, AZ

I have never been an overly religious person. The last time I attended a joyous service was the day I got married, fourteen years ago. With that said, I do consider myself spiritual. And something spiritual happened at the well-known Chapel of the Holy Cross (Church in the Rock) in Sedona, Arizona. Something that made me feel a little closer to heaven.

I woke up this morning and decided to take a spontaneous solo road trip to Northern Arizona. My first stop was Sedona which is well-known for being a place of spirituality. I could always use some peace and serenity. The Chapel of the Holy Cross was on just about every tourists map, highlighted as a must-see. And I…must see.

At first glance, you can’t help but think “how the heck did they build a church that fit so perfectly within rocks.” The concept for this church was created in 1932, but they searched for years for the perfect place to put it. I think they found it.

I signed in as a record that I had been there with people from all over the world.

You can find small statues, such as these, lingering throughout the interior and exterior.

Rows of candles, half of them already glimmering, lined the interior walls. I lit two, one for my grandmother and one for Pete’s, as a remembrance of two people who are sorely missed.

Each of these candles had dedication plaques for others loved ones.

After lighting the candles, I sat in the front row pew to take a moment to remember my grandmothers laugh. As I did, three visitors starting singing this beautiful hymn, a cappella. It brought me to tears. I couldn’t help but feel as if my sweet Nonna was there with me.

This is the view from the pews. Maybe I am going to start going to church again.

The chapel is perched on top of the red rocks, with these panormaic views. The only obstruction is the 8,000+ square foot home that is built nearby. There have been many rumors as to who owns this home; Nicholas Cage, Johnny Depp and the inventor of Lasik. Next time, I’m going to knock on the front door to find out.
