Let's face it, there is a stigma attached to going to the movies alone. I don't know why, I did not create it, I don't like it…it just is. Though I have never been opposed to going to the theater by myself, I had not done it previously and it was about time to take myself on a date. I am not a loner, but I do a lot of stuff alone. Why? Because a long time ago I vowed to not let fear, insecurity or simply lack of friends availability to keep me from having amazing experiences. I do have many friends, a loving family and a willing spouse, but sometimes they are not inclined or able to do all the things I want to. So, why should I sacrifice living life to the fullest?

I was recently on a semi-vacation in Arizona by myself and really wanted to see The Social Network. In general, I don't go to the movies too often since the monumental creation of Netflix, but I just couldn't pass up this opportunity to check another item off my bucket list. I chose the late afternoon showing on a Saturday, not the recommended time choice if you are trying to avoid oodles of people.

Potential anxieties ensue…

1. Standing in line alone. Not as bad as you would think, for all these people know, I could be meeting someone inside.

2. Choosing a seat. I chose a seat close to the aisle with vacancies on either side of me…maybe I will make friends. A family of three sat directly to my right. Now, I wasn't alone at all. Anyone watching would think that I was a part of this family. Do you think the woman next to me would mind if I rested my head on her shoulder?

3. Leaving the show. Amidst the crowd of exiting masses, no one would suspect I came by myself. Even though there was no one to immediately discuss the movie with, I phoned a friend later.

When it comes down to it, most people really don't pay as much attention to what you are doing as you think. People are really wrapped up in their own lives. So, work through your insecurities and don't pass up an opportunity to have an incredible experience.
